We believe democracy must start from the bottom up, rooted in the right of people everywhere to shape the decisions that affect their lives. Democracy International strengthens direct democracy and citizen participation locally, nationally and beyond borders. With our work, we support activists, connect reformers and spotlight democratic innovations around the world. As humanity becomes more informed and connected, our democratic systems must evolve in step.
Direct Democracy
In a democracy, the power to decide lies with the people. But how they decide can take many different forms. Direct democracy is the collection of tools that allow people to make decisions on specific issues, rather than by choosing a representative to decide for them (usually through elections).
Citizen Participation
Citizen participation gives democracy its meaning. Democracy International strengthens participation at all levels—local, national, European, and global—by supporting tools, campaigns, and communities that make democracy more inclusive and responsive.
Human Rights & Democracy
For Democracy International, democracy, human rights and the rule of law are the fundamental pillars of any modern democratic society. But how are these principles connected—and how can we recognise when they are under threat?
Transparency & Democracy
Transparency is a cornerstone of democracy. Only when citizens know how decisions are made can they hold governments accountable and participate meaningfully. Yet across Europe and the world, powerful lobbies still operate in the shadows. Democracy International and civil society demand binding transparency rules—at national, EU, and global level—to ensure politics serves the public, not private interests.
Youth & Democracy
Around the world, youth are stepping up to demand fairer, more transparent, and more inclusive political systems. We’re here to support, bundle and amplify those efforts. Through European Democracy Camps, global volunteering services, local advocacy trainings, and international campaigns, we create spaces for young people to explore democratic principles, engage with peers across borders, and take action in their communities.
Elections
Free and fair elections are at the heart of democracy. They empower citizens to choose their representatives and influence the direction of their societies. Democracy International advocates for more inclusive electoral systems – from lowering the voting age to extending voting rights for foreign residents – and for combining elections with direct and participatory tools that give citizens a voice every day, not just on election day.
