About us
Democracy International is an independent, non-governmental membership organisation committed to empowering people to shape the decisions that affect their lives. We support citizen participation and direct democracy at all levels – from the grassroots to the global.
Founded as a registered non-profit association in June 2011 under German law (eingetragener Verein e.V.), our roots go back to a network of democracy activists formed in 2002. Our headquarters are based in Cologne, Germany, and our work is funded by membership fees and individual donations.
All around the world, people are working to strengthen citizen participation and direct democracy. Democracy International supports these activists by helping build campaigns and organisations, offering expertise and strategic guidance, and connecting them through a global network of reformers. We also campaign for more democracy at the transnational level – where decisions increasingly shape our shared future but remain out of citizens’ reach. Through solidarity, knowledge-sharing and advocacy, we work to ensure that democracy grows stronger from the ground up – across borders, cultures and generations.
We work to make political systems more accountable, participatory and open to the people they serve.
