Democracy International is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that was formally established in June 2011 as a registered membership association according to German non-profit law (eingetragener Verein e.V.). Hitherto Democracy International had existed as a loose network of democracy activists since 2002. The headquarters are based in Cologne, Germany.

There are people all around the world who commit their lives to strengthening citizens' participation and direct democracy. Democracy International supports such democracy activists in building campaigns and organisations. It shares knowledge and legal expertise on direct democracy. Also Democracy International campaigns for more democracy at the transnational level. Democracy International's goals are to give citizens a direct say in political decision-making and to make governments more accountable.

Democracy International's mission is based on values and ideas that essentially promote and expand citizens' participation and direct involvement in their political and democratic systems. Every person has the ability and the right to help shape the world in which they are living. That is what we are fighting for.

Democracy International works on a wide range of issues, including direct democracy, citizen participation, transparency and human rights. The aims of its work are to strengthen democratic systems, improve democratic instruments and expand citizens' opportunities for participation and decision-making.
Our Funding
Democracy International's work is independent and non-partisan. Our work is funded by membership fees and individual donations, as well as grants from foundations and institutional funding. As a non-profit organisation based in Germany, Democracy International is authorised to issue donation receipts.
