Over time, art has created democratic formation within people of all ages, because it is a form of communication that helps spread and reinforce the general knowledge about current trends in our society. The purpose is that the artwork will inspire a broad public to interact in the debate on our common fundamental rights.
With the Art of Fundamental Rights, we want to raise awareness about our fundamental human rights through art, because they continue to be under attack in several countries. We are seeing these developments all over the world, including in Europe, where authoritarian regimes exercise power over minorities and vulnerable groups.
In 2025 we are celebrating 25 years of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. However, very few people know about the Charter and that we have common values which need to be protected. Therefore, we need to raise awareness about our fundamental rights and increase the support for democratic values. That is why, within the project, artists from across Europe interpreted each right enshrined in the Charter.
Building on the art and together with our partners from Denmark, Spain/Catalonia, Greece, Poland and Belgium, we are organising two events in each country:
- An exhibition that brings together individuals from all partner countries, followed by discussions on fundamental rights.
- A local dialogue on fundamental rights with citizens and candidates to the European Parliament in 2024.
Our activities
The chARTer event in Cologne took place at the Europe Dome during the Pride Street Festival and the official Christopher Street-Day demonstration with the aim to bring citizens attention to discussing and interacting with the art work and consequently the charter of fundamental rights.

The TOGETHER | SEPARATED. CULTURE - EUROPE - POLICY event in Cologne. Right before the 2024 elections to the European Parliament, Democracy International joined forces with the Volkshochschule Cologne (VHS Köln) and the Europe Office of the City of Cologne to bring citizens together for a special event at the intersection of art, culture, and democracy.
