The Direct Democracy Navigator features direct democracy procedures and practices worldwide. It is a global information and collaboration platform based on the general typology of modern direct democracy.
The Navigator allows users to navigate the different direct democracy instruments in place around the world and to compare them with each other. It currently contains around 2,000 legal forms of direct democracy in over 100 states.
The idea of the Navigator World Map is simple and straightforward: Use the cursor and move it across the world map to any place you choose. With a click of a mouse, you will get reliable information about the status of direct democracy in that particular place, the direct democracy tools available on different political levels and their practical implementation.
The Direct Democracy Navigator was started as a project by Dr. Klaus Hofmann, a member of Democracy International, who added new cases constantly.
The success or failure of political participation is largely determined by the formal rules of participatory instruments. Therefore, a question of democratic empowerment is also a matter of knowledge and access to resources. As with other (scientific) topics, however, access to well-founded information about the rules of direct democracy is not readily available. Against this background, the Direct Democracy Navigator was founded out of civil society.
