Launched on 13 January 2021, the Citizens’ Assembly on Germany’s Role in the World brought together 160 randomly selected participants for six weeks of online deliberation on key foreign policy issues. The Assembly marks the second national-level citizens’ assembly in Germany. In contrast to the earlier Citizens’ Assembly on Democracy, this edition took place entirely online due to the pandemic, enabling participants to collaboratively develop policy recommendations for decision-makers on Germany’s global responsibilities.

The use of citizens‘ assemblies to complement representative democracy has known a true boom in 2020, with examples popping up all around the world.
In Germany, the Bundestag has commissioned an official citizens‘ assembly for the first time ever, which will see randomly selected citizens discuss „Germany‘s role in the world“ and come up with legislative proposals.

Our partner Mehr Demokratie was responsible for implementing the citizens’ assembly, while Democracy International was in charge of the international communications and PR.
