2021, together with our partner organisations, we held the first self-organised referendum at national level in Germany: Abstimmung21.
Parallel to the federal elections, citizens were able to vote on four topics: the introduction of direct democracy on the national level, a climate package aimed at limiting global warming to 1,5°C, regulation of organ donation and non-profit hospitals. More than 340.000 people registered to vote, almost 160.000 participated. In October, the results of the votes were handed over to the new government coalition together with the demand for more direct democracy in Germany.
