We believe that every citizen has the right, the capacity and the responsibility to shape the society they live in. With this driving force, Democracy International works for a world in which people hold final political power.
Direct and participatory democracy tools take us back to the true meaning of democracy: a discussion on the issues that matter to us in order to find solutions that work for everyone. We believe that strong and truly inclusive democracies not only develop our societies further, but also are an antidote to rising populism and mistrust.
Tools like these are not a replacement of democratic representation, they are an enrichment. At the same time, direct and participatory democracy tools can only function in a broader democratic context, where civic freedoms and human rights are guaranteed.
By taking ownership of the democratic process, citizens build trust in themselves and one another, creating a sense of responsibility and connection. This leads to more thought-through, innovative, inclusive and accepted decisions, and ultimately also to a more accountable government.

Democracy is never finished – it is a living, evolving process shaped by people, cultures and histories. Through reporting, research and the facilitation of exchanges, we explore democratic practices, tools and reforms at the cutting edge around the world.
By learning from one another, we can improve how democracy works everywhere.We build cross-border solidarity among citizens and democracy groups by connecting activists, organisers, scholars and reformers in a living global network.
Drawing on over three decades of experience, we support grassroots movements with strategic advice, shared knowledge and campaign expertise.
We share our direct democracy and citizen participation knowhow with those traditionally excluded from decision-making - from young people to vulnerable minorities. We want to empower them to take part and help shape a democracy that works for everyone.
Our democracy is based on nation states and no longer reflects the challenges we face. Humanity is more informed, more connected and more capable than ever. It’s time our democratic systems caught up. We campaign for more direct democracy and citizen participation at the transnational level: from strengthening the European Citizens’ Initiative to spotlighting global innovations.
