Contribute to democracy, grow as a person, and make a difference in Europe!
Democracy International offers young people the opportunity to volunteer with us for 12 months through the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) programme. As an ESC volunteer, you'll be part of our Youth Programme and gain hands-on experience in international democracy work.
Each year, two ESC volunteers join our team at the Democracy International office in Cologne, Germany. You'll work closely with our team and other young changemakers to:
- Support the coordination and implementation of our Democracy Camp, a flagship international youth event that brings together young people to explore and strengthen democratic participation.
- Assist with outreach and community-building activities for our Change Makers Network, a platform connecting youth-led initiatives across Europe.
- Help plan and run online and offline events that promote active citizenship and democratic innovation.
- Produce creative content (blog posts, social media, videos) to raise awareness about youth participation in democracy.
- Participate in workshops, training sessions, and international exchange opportunities.
As part of the European Solidarity Corps, volunteers receive:
- Free accommodation in Cologne
- A monthly allowance and travel reimbursement
- Health insurance and support with administrative matters
- A full-time placement with mentorship and training
- The chance to develop skills in communication, project management, intercultural teamwork, and democratic education
This programme is open to young people aged 18 to 30 who reside in the EU or associated countries and are eligible for the ESC scheme. We're looking for volunteers who are:
- Motivated to support democracy and civic engagement
- Proactive, curious, and open-minded
- Fluent in English (German is a plus, but not required)
- Interested in working in a multicultural, international environment
Our ESC volunteering cycle begins each year in March and runs for 12 months. The application process typically opens in autumn. To stay informed and find out when applications open, please follow us on our social media or check back here.
